SENATOR THE HON MICHAELIA CASH

SHADOW MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND WORKPLACE RELATIONS

DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATE

SENATOR FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA

MEDIA RELEASE

17 JANUARY 2023

VALE SENATOR JIM MOLAN AO DSC

I wish to express my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the family of our much-loved colleague and great friend, Senator Jim Molan, following his sad passing this week.

Jim was a giant of a man, who served his nation with honour and distinction and will be deeply missed in the Australian Senate.

Jim came to the Senate after a long and distinguished career in the Australian Army, in which he rose to the rank of Major General.

In 2004 he was deployed for a year to Iraq, to serve as Chief of Operations for the Headquarters of the Multinational Force.

Prior to that Jim served as commanding officer of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, commander of the 1st Brigade, commander of the 1st Division and its Deployable Joint Force Headquarters, and commander of the Australian Defence College.

From the moment Jim stepped into the Senate chamber in 2017 he showed wisdom, integrity, commitment, resilience and perseverance.

Jim was a conviction politician, but someone who would listen to all sides of an argument before deciding his position, which he then held fiercely.

When he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in 2021 Jim faced the battle with the same positive and resilient attitude he showed during his long military and political careers.

We will miss Jim deeply in the Senate Chamber and in our Coalition party room.

I send my love and strength to his wife Anne and their four children. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Rest in peace Jim.
