LABOR ALIGNED ISRAEL PROTESTS DISAPPOINTING
At a time when Australia’s Jewish community is seeking understanding, reassurance and solidarity in the wake of the Bondi terrorist attack, it is deeply disappointing that some Labor and union activists are planning protests aimed at shouting down the official visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
The Liberal Party welcomes President Herzog’s upcoming visit to Australia and recognises its importance for a community that has been profoundly affected by terrorism and an unprecedented rise in antisemitism.
President Herzog’s visit is about empathy, reassurance and standing with Australian Jews at a moment of deep grief and fear.
His intention to meet with bereaved families, those injured in the Bondi attack, and Jewish communities across Australia is an important and compassionate act of solidarity.
President Herzog is a democratic head of state, a long-standing advocate for dialogue and coexistence, and a leader who has consistently engaged in efforts to advance peace.
Welcoming him to Australia is entirely consistent with our national values of democracy, respect and open engagement.
Australia has a proud tradition of standing against hatred in all its forms and supporting respectful engagement.
That tradition should guide political leaders and civil society alike.
The Liberal Party stands firmly with Australia’s Jewish community. We welcome President Herzog’s visit and urge that it proceed in a spirit of dignity, safety and respect.
